PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest

This year, PBS and WNED-TV in Buffalo/Toronto are partnering to launch the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, a national-local contest designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. WVPT is conducting this newly revised contest throughout the station’s service area. Traditionally, the contest has been open to children in grades K-3. Virginia PBS stations are including students in grades 4 and 5 this year. Although they will not be able to participate nationally, they will be judged and recognized locally. Click here for entry form and contest guidelines and rules.

Aspiring writers and illustrators in grades K-5 are invited to submit stories from January 11-March 1, 2010 for the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. This contest will:
           • get students excited about writing
           • stimulate creativity
           • hone writing skills
           • address language arts SOL
           • lend an opportunity to incorporate the art curriculum with writing or vice versa
           • provide an avenue to showcase student talent
           • allow students to have competitive fun

To enter the contest, students submit original stories or poems with at least five original illustrations along with an entry form. Contest guidelines and rules are available online. Classroom sets of stories sent in by the teacher are also accepted, but each story must have a completed entry form.
All stories will be judged locally to determine the top three submissions at each grade level. The first place stories from grades K-3 will be submitted to the national contest.
